This talk will provide a brief overview of China’s historical evolution from 1800 to 1949 as background for a more detailed discussion of the political, cultural, and economic evolution led by its key historical figures during the tumultuous period of the People’s Republic of China since 1949. Based on these transformations, professor Brown will reflect on contemporary Chinese leadership’s current governance, sense of national identity, and vision for its future.
